Did you know that Sema dervish performances represent a mystical journey of man's spiritual ascension through love, finding the truth and reaching perfection? The Cappadocia Dervish performance, or Sufi sema, is part of a formal ceremony known as Sema. Its origin was inspired by Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi (1207 – 1273), who was also a Dervish. The ceremony, performed to try to reach religious ecstasy, symbolizes the different meanings of a mystical cycle to perfection (from Ascension to Miracle). With his dervish hat (the tombstone of his ego) and his white skirt (the cover of his ego), he is spiritually born into the truth. When he takes off his black robe, he travels and reaches spiritual maturity by passing through the stages of the sky. He represents a number by keeping his arms crossed at the beginning of each stage of the sky and testifies to the unity of Allah. With his arms open, ready to receive God's blessing, he rotates around his heart, turning from right to left, with his right hand pointing towards the sky and his left hand towards the ground to give to the poor. This is God's way of communicating God's spiritual gift to people whom He looks upon with divine attention. It revolves around the heart from right to left and embraces all humanity and all creation with love and affection.
